Total Cholesterol
Less than 200 mg/dl Desirable Level–Low risk for heart disease
200-239 mg/dl Borderline–Increased risk
240 mg/dl+ High–High risk
LDL Cholesterol
(Known as “Bad Cholesterol;” Clogs arteries/contributes to heart disease)
Less than 100 mg/dl Optimal
100-129 mg/dl Acceptable
130-159 mg/dl Borderline-High
160-189 mg/dl High
180 mg/dl+ Very High
HDL Cholesterol
(Known as “Good Cholesterol;” Carries cholesterol away from vessels)
Less than 40 mg/dl Low–Major risk factor for heart disease
40-59 mg/dl Acceptable–The higher the HDL the better
60 mg/dl+ Optimal–Protective against heart disease
