  Refuse to Misuse Antibiotics

In a recent survey of local physicians, 82% responded that increasing antibiotic resistance is a problem in our community. Frequently, patients with viral infections like cold, flu, earache and sore throat demand prescriptions for antibiotics from their physicians. However, antibiotics are only effective in treating bacterial infections such as strep throat. Unfortunately, taking antibiotics when unnecessary can cause germs to become resistant to the medicine, making the drugs ineffective against future, more dangerous infections.

Keep these tips in mind during cold and flu season:

1. Work closely with your physician to determine the cause of your illness and the best treatment.

2. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, follow instructions exactly.

3. Always finish the entire prescription of antibiotics, unless instructed otherwise by your physician.

4. Never share antibiotics with family members or friends.
